Innovation on the coast: CarbonOcean visits Bremerhaven ⚓️
26.02.2026
A breath of fresh air for the energy transition! Our team at CarbonOcean Engineering GmbH recently traveled to the far north. We had the pleasure of attending this year's SynFuel conference hosted by ttz Bremerhaven – and we returned with a wealth of inspiration.
A strong network for the fuels of tomorrow
The conference was a first-class platform for bringing the entire synthetic fuels value chain together. We were particularly impressed by the lively exchange between the various stakeholders:
Producers & Distributors: Insights into the scaling and logistics of the future.
Users: Exciting practical reports on the use of SynFuels in industry and mobility.
Research institutions: Latest scientific findings that pave the way for technological breakthroughs.
Our conclusion:
It was a fantastic event with a palpable sense of optimism. For us at CarbonOcean, one thing is clear: only through close collaboration between research and industry can we establish sustainable solutions that are both ecologically sound and economically viable.
A heartfelt thank you to ttz Bremerhaven for the excellent organization and the many valuable insights.
CarbonOcean AG workshop at GEOMAR in Kiel
12.2025
On December 1 and 2, 2025, a workshop took place at the premises of the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre in Kiel. Together, we reflected on the milestones achieved, and Prof. Dr. Anton Eisenhauer provided an outlook on the next steps. An exciting project attracts talent, so we also used the workshop as an opportunity to personally welcome our new team members and integrate them directly into our dynamic. As part of the workshop, we also had the opportunity to visit the company Taprogge and learn about the current status of the assembly work on our first prototype. We expect commissioning to take place in Q1 of the coming year, enabling our team to test and implement the research approaches achieved directly in the facility.

High-ranking delegation from Chongqing
21.05.2025
As part of a delegation visit, Ms. Wang Rong, District Mayor of Rongchang District in the city of Chongqing, also visited CarbonOcean in Kiel. Prof. Dr. Anton Eisenhauer and Prof. Dr. Peter Herzig presented the activities of CarbonOcean. The engaging discussion made it clear that CO₂-related topics are also of great relevance in China. Both sides expressed interest in continuing the exchange in the future.
CarbonOcean – one step further
04.2025
The management team of CarbonOcean, led by founder Dave L. Deck, met in Kiel on 15 and 16 April 2025.
Scientific Director Prof. Dr Anton Eisenhauer (GEOMAR) informed the members of the Strategic Board, former Minister of Science Prof. Dr Johanna Wanka and former Director of GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Prof. Dr Peter Herzig, as well as the two CarbonOcean Managing Directors Georg Habighorst and Prof. Dr Michael Bruno Klein, about the current status of work on the COSCEM (Carbon Ocean for Seawater Carbon Dioxide Extraction and Mitigation) project. Dr. Peter Herzig, as well as the two CarbonOcean managing directors Georg Habighorst and Prof. Dr. Michael Bruno Klein.
GEOMAR Administrative Director Frank Spiekermann also welcomed the representatives of CarbonOcean and was briefed on the status of COSCEM as a joint project of GEOMAR and CarbonOcean.
The CarbonOcean approach uses the ocean as a source of non-fossil CO₂ to supply the chemical industry as part of a CCU (carbon capture and utilisation) concept. Coupling this with BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) also opens up the possibility of achieving net-negative CO₂ emissions.
Event for the signing of the research cooperation with GEOMAR, statement by speaker Claus Ruhe Madsen...
15.09.2024
Claus Ruhe Madsen
Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport, Labor, Technology and Tourism of the State of Schleswig-Holstein.
“One thing is clear from Geomar projects: we know what we don't know. When we look out to sea, there is still a lot of hidden potential that can solve problems above the water surface. Finding solutions through research that you hadn't thought of before.”
“We find solutions for energy or the environment, but research requires not only curiosity but also the courage to invest in technologies without knowing whether it is a solution or perhaps just an intermediate step.”
“The sea is the best product ever, it has no limits, the sea is open.”
Visit to the Hannover Messe

Future prospects and seawater electrolysis the focus of the project meeting at the Hannover Messe
04.2024
A project meeting on the topic of CarbonOcean took place as part of the Hanover Fair. In addition to the representative of Geomars, Prof. Dr. Eisenhauer, Dr. Thorsten Hickmann (whitecell Eisenhuth), the founder David L. Deck, Dr. Stefan Gossens, Olaf Krawczyk (Ministry of Economics of Lower Saxony) and Georg Habighorst took part. Prof. Dr. Eisenhauer outlined the next steps and the technical structure. One of the topics, whether parallel or integrative to this project, will be seawater electrolysis. There are already concrete approaches to this.
